Assessing the higher education situation for Syrian students in Türkiye: Challenges and opportunities

The Syrian conflict has driven millions of Syrians to seek refuge in neighbouring countries, with Turkiye hosting the greatest number. Amongst the many challenges faced, access to higher education remains a pressing concern. Although registration in public Turkish universities was simpler in the early years of the conflict, and free of charge for Syrian refugees, the introduction of substantial tuition fees for Syrians in recent years has made it unaffordable for those from low to medium income households, with the additional uncertain of being able to access the Turkish job market following graduation. This research will focus on higher education and their prospects within the Turkish job market and explore the barriers and opportunities faced by Syrian youth, that will have a vital role to play in the reconstruction of Syria, aiming to enhance understanding and shed light on potential pathways.
