Academic Writing Skills (17-20 December 2018)

Led by: Dr Tom Parkinson/University of Kent and Prof Kevin McDonald/Middlesex University.

Workshop Aim This workshop was designed to support participants in preparing research for dissemination in a variety of formats, including research proposals, scientific posters, lightning talks, conference presentations, and full academic articles. The workshop focused on core structural principles of research writing including the use of sub-sections leading from clearly stated research questions, situating the research in context and in relation to extant research and theory (literature) and summarising findings.

The workshop culminated in a conference on the final day – 20th December 2018 – which followed the format of a typical one-day research symposium comprising full presentations, lightening talks, a poster session and round tables.  Workshop participants engaged as presenters, session chairs, panel and audience members.

EAP colleagues provided support throughout, focussing particularly on sentence level writing, idioms and vocabulary.
