Syria Programme Updates

23 February 2023

Congratulations to Dr Mahmoud Zinalabadin, a Cara Syria Programme (SP) participant for his excellent lecture at The Courtauld Institute of Art, U. of London this week (20/2/23) “The Architecture of Aleppo City: From destruction to reconstruction”. Cara is most grateful to The Courtauld for their hosting of Dr Zinalabadin on a 5-week SP research incubation visit. Our thanks to Professor Alixe Bovey and Dr Lucy Bradnock for organising the event and to all their wonderful colleagues for their support!

Mahmoud has been documenting the historic city of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as its destruction during the war and reconstruction, as captured in his exhibition: ‘Aleppo: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow’, awarded a Fondazione Santagata Special Mention. The award is dedicated to the best projects realised in territories or communities with UNESCO designation and capable of promoting sustainable development. His work will result in a database of 50 of Aleppos’ historic buildings.
